Every person has an obligation to contribute to the wellbeing of his or her society. As citizens and students, engaging in activities that can help us achieve this goal is of key importance. One of the most worthwhile and fruitful ways to do so is community service. Engaging in community service provides us with the opportunity to become active members of society. No matter how little the act of kindness, it has a positive impact on the community.

On the 9th of February 2019, learners of Years 6 through Year 11 made it their mission to clean out the empty plots surrounding our campus, L’ecole for Advanced Studies. We decided to start off by cleaning up the plot to the right of our school. Around 40 students gathered up at the campus where we divided into 5 groups of 8. Different duties were assigned to each member of the group. Some volunteered to pick up the litter while others volunteered to hold open the rubbish bags. Hygiene was of course taken into consideration for which we were provided with plastic gloves and masks to prevent us from getting exposed to harmful bacteria. We spent the following 3 hours cleaning, which was time well spent as we felt elated and satisfied throughout the activity – cleaning is indeed therapeutic!

With teamwork and dedication, we cleaned out the entire plot and collected a total of 126 bags of trash. It was a success for us all and, at the end of the day, we felt really satisfied with helping our community. It was indeed a memorable experience, and we plan to make this a regular activity for our learners. I strongly recommend everyone reading this to help out their society in whatever way they can for the benefit of their community and the people in it. A small act of kindness can go a long way.
